150,000 Pigs Scheduled to Die for — Nothing

April 14, 2008

Now that Canada’s fishermen are almost done with clubbing seals for the year, the Canadian government has turned its attention to the pigs. Ottawa has just approved a massive bail out of pig farmers at taxpayer expense. They’ve worked out a deal for pig farmers to kill of 150,000 pigs by the autumn, in exchange for a $50 million payout. Not a single ounce of that flesh will become ham or back bacon — it’ll all be ground up into pet food or otherwise disposed of so as to prop up pork prices. Link.

Update: I messed up by claiming none of that meat will feed people. The source article says “up to” 25 percent of the pork will be donated to food banks. Of course, if pork producers were sincere about feeding people instead of throwing the meat away, they would commit to a specific quantity of meat to donate.
