USDA Bans Downer Cows For Meat Slaughter

May 20, 2008

This should have happened decades ago, but the USDA has finally decided to ban slaughterhouses from using downer cows for meat. Up until now, if workers could get the animal up on his feet to pass a veterinary inspection, the animal could be butchered for food. But after the video from the Hallmark/Westland slaughterhouse caused national outrage, change has been in the air. The video showed workers ramming cows with forklifts, shooting water up their noses, and stinging the animals with electric prods — all in an effort to get sick animals on their feet so they could pass inspection.
