Rotten Tomatoes

July 23, 2008

Everyone knows by now that tomatoes just caused a huge salmonella outbreak, except for the niggling detail that tomatoes apparently weren’t responsible at all — the outbreak seems to have come from jalapeno peppers grown in Mexico.

Here’s a terrific article assessing the damage done to the tomato industry. Excerpts:

Meanwhile, where does the tomato go to get its reputation back? …As often happens in crime coverage, the indictment lands on page one, while the acquittal gets buried on page 18. How many consumers have heard the all-clear siren on tomatoes?

Other points raised by this article make this the best piece I’ve read on the current outbreak, even if it does make the borderline ludicrous claim that “The U.S. food supply is extremely safe.” Link. (Thanks, Kevin)
