Coming Soon: Methane-Free Cows?

August 23, 2008

(Thanks, Mike) One of the big points I made in Meat Market is that activists must be very careful when bringing up environmental considerations against meat-eating. That’s because, as technology advances, factory farms can be less wasteful and less harmful to the environment.

This point is driven home in this short five minute interview, which concerns the fact that cows belch huge amounts of methane — a potent greenhouse gas. Well, it turns out that researchers are looking at the problem and may soon have a way to dramatically reduce the amount of methane a cow burps up. For now, cattle ranching is an environmental menace where greenhouse gases are concerned, but this technology could resolve the issue and is something to keep your eye on. Audio Link (five minutes).
