Time Magazine on Meat and Global Warming

September 10, 2008

I pretty much hate writing about meat and global warming, for reasons explained in a post I made only this morning. But Time magazine just published a lengthy piece on the subject. And while this article doesn’t address the concerns I raised this morning, I still fear it’s just a matter of time until veggie advocates have those points bite them in the ass.

Anyway, the Time piece is thorough and worth reading, but the final paragraph is horrible in more ways than I can count:

It’s great for magazines to come up with 51 ways you can save the environment, but relying on individuals to voluntarily change their behavior is nowhere near as effective as political change aimed at speeding the transition to an economy far less carbon-intensive than our current one.

The issue here is that personal choices can make an enormous difference, and these are the only choices each of us has control over. Time presents the issue in a way that suggests there’s no point in any of us doing the right thing if the government doesn’t step in. I think that’s a counterproductive and altogether repugnant way of thinking. Personal responsibility matters, especially when government refuses to lead courageously. (Thanks, Michelle). Link.
