Big Egg Industry Setback on Prop 2

September 23, 2008

So much for the USDA’s plans to buy advertising intended to turn California voters against Prop 2:

A federal judge accused the U.S. Department of Agriculture of ignoring the law on government involvement in political campaigns Monday and ordered the agency not to spend any money collected from egg producers on ads against a state ballot measure that would ban cramped cages for hens and other farm animals.

The whole article is a must-read. Turns out the head of the USDA had personally endorsed this No-On-2 advertising, while one of the agency’s lawyers was calling the ads, “neutral and educational.” Scumbags. (Thanks, Bea). Link.
