Paul Shapiro’s Prop 2 Victory Recap

November 5, 2008

As you likely know by now, Prop 2 passed by a landslide margin: 63-37, making California the first to state in the U.S. to ban battery cages, and adding it to the list of states that have banned veal crates and gestation crates. It would be difficult to describe how historic this victory is, and how grateful I am to every person and organization who supported the campaign in any way.

Make sure to check out the Prop 2 coverage at www.HumaneSociety.org, including the photo slideshow from our LA victory party last night (it includes lots of other inspiring campaign photos, too).

There are many articles out there on this, but here’s the story in the LA Times.

Of course, congratulations to Prop 2 campaign manager Jennifer Fearing, who did a wonderful job shepherding the measure to victory.

While this was the biggest battle we’ve yet faced, it was just the latest chapter in what’s sure to be a long struggle. The farm animal protection movement has a painfully long way to go, but today, thanks to Prop 2’s passage, we’re closer to that truly humane society we animal advocates envision.
