Meat and Greenhouse Gases

The connection between livestock and global warming is becoming increasingly well-known, and this New York Times article offers some of the best major media coverage I’ve seen. It’s got a great lead paragraph:

The cows and pigs dotting these flat green plains in the southern Netherlands create a bucolic landscape. But looked at through the lens of greenhouse gas accounting, they are living smokestacks, spewing methane emissions into the air.

Once again, we see that livestock is a big problem when it comes to global warming. And it’s nice to see this piece stress the benefits that come with reducing meat consumption. Yet it’s also plain that much of this problem can be solved using existing technology — the question being: do governments have the will to mandate methane recovery systems, if such regulations push up the price of meat?
