Canada’s Half-Assed Listeria Inquiry

January 20, 2009

Concerning last year’s Maple Leaf listeria outbreak, the Canadian government is finally taking action. Sort of.

They’ve appointed one person to conduct an investigation, with a report due July 20. Sheila Weatherill, the investigator, is getting fat compensation (at least $1200 a day, plus expenses), but has been granted virtually no power. According to the Ottawa Citizen, Weatherill cannot:

declare criminal or civil wrongdoing, nor will she have the power to subpoena witnesses or compel testimony.

Doesn’t seem like Harper’s government has the slightest interest in getting to the bottom of an incident that left 20 people dead. Link.
