Britain’s National Health Service has decided that, as a huge organization, it needs to take global warming seriously. As a result, it will soon be offering patients meatless meals. And, get this: for at least some of its menus, meatless won’t merely be an option — there won’t be any meat available.
This move sets a hugely important precedent; I’ve never before heard of a major branch of government embracing meatless meals for any reason. Now that Britain’s hospital system has made this move, can the world’s armies, prison populations, and school lunch programs be far behind?
This announcement is going to make the work of activists like Josh Balk and Mahi Klosterhalfen vastly easier, as they approach institutional dining systems with the objective of reducing their use of animal products. Link.
