Stroke Rates Higher Near Fast Food Restaurants

February 25, 2009

We all know fast food is terrible for you. But here’s a little nugget of information that should raise an eyebrow. Cases of stroke are higher in neighborhoods that have lots of fast food restaurants:

Researchers found that those who lived in areas with the most fast food restaurants had a 13% higher relative risk of stroke than those who lived in areas with the least fast food restaurants, after controlling for demographic and socioeconomic issues.

I hasten to add: correlation is not causation. But it’s still damned interesting. Link.

Postscript: If every activist in the animal protection movement read and understood the Wikipedia link above, we would collectively be vastly more persuasive and credible.
