“Natural” Meat

March 30, 2009

The Atlantic’s featuring a short article from the former owners of Niman Ranch, Bill Niman and Nicolette Hahn Niman.

They offer a good summary of how, not so long ago, the word natural, when applied to meat, was totally meaningless. But today, thanks to some moves by the FDA, the word has become only mostly meaningless. To produce “natural” meat today, you can no longer feed the animals antibiotics or the flesh of other animals.

If that’s all the FDA requires, I think they ought to mandate that quotes be put around Natural so that everyone’s clued in on the joke. (Via the Daily Dish.) Link.
