Kristof: Animal Rights Is Now Mainstream

April 9, 2009

One of the most frustrating aspects of my work is that I regularly see mainstream media completely botch its coverage of vegetarian issues.

But today’s New York Times op-ed by Nicholas Kirstof offers up a thorough and well-informed accounting of recent progress made by the animal protection movement. It’s one of the most important articles on the topic I’ve ever seen published.

The piece ends with Kristof declaring that, “… animal rights are now firmly on the mainstream ethical agenda.” And everything Kristof writes in this piece makes that assertion irrefutable. It’s a sign of how far we’ve come in just a few years: it would be unthinkable, indeed laughable, for a top newspaper columnist to have made that declaration even five years ago.

Along with Mark Bittman, Kristof brings to two the number of New York Times columnists who eat meat but can be counted on to cover vegetarian topics reasonably and accurately. Link.
