Egypt To Slaughter All Pigs

April 29, 2009

Egypt has come up with an approach to keeping swine flu out of its country: kill every single one of the nation’s 300,000 pigs.

While that’s a great way to keep a new variation of swine flu from developing, it’s probably not going to do much to protect Egyptians against the current swine flu outbreak.

This is rampant speculation on my part, but I’m thinking this policy might have something to do with Islamic people seeking an excuse to destroy Egypt’s pork industry. In any case, if you’re going to kill 300,000 animals, the decision ought to have some good science behind it; and I don’t think that’s the case here.

I’ll post a correction if it turns out I’ve got my head up my ass regarding the motivations behind this cull. (Thanks, Beverly.) Link.
