Preparing for Bacon Flu

August 13, 2009

Time published a long piece today on the spread of bacon flu and the likelihood of a tough winter ahead. One person charged with coordinating America’s response says, “You are going to see a spike in deaths.”

And microbiologist Hugh Pennington says: “We are already in a pandemic. There’s no containment option now.” The article includes a worrisome estimate that has gone almost unreported: the World Health Organization predicts that 15 to 45 percent of the world population will come down with bacon flu.

This piece offers an excellent review of where matters currently stand, as well as the preparations that have so far been made. Everything hinges on whether the current bacon flu virus mutates in a way that makes it more deadly or easier to spread. Link.
