Michigan to Ban Battery Cages, and Veal & Gestation Crates

October 1, 2009

A giant victory is on the brink of happening in Michigan, and this will certainly count as the greatest legislative gain for animals to happen in America in 2009. Michigan’s house and senate have agreed on a bill that will bring Prop 2-style animal welfare standards to the state:

With the governor’s signature, Michigan will become the seventh state to ban gestation crates, the fifth to ban veal crates, and the second to ban battery cages.

A big congratulations to HSUS and its partners. I just got off the phone with HSUS’ factory farming campaigns director Paul Shapiro, and he’s agreed to do an interview with me about this victory. I expect to post the podcast late tomorrow night. Link.
