Singer: Grass-Fed Beef No Solution to Climate Change

November 10, 2009

On October 31, the New York Times published an irritating article by Nicolette Hahn Niman arguing that alternative ranching systems can produce environmentally-friendly meat. I was tempted to blog about the story, but it seemed neither good enough nor bad enough to be worth covering.

Yesterday the Times published a letter co-written by Peter Singer that demolishes one of the central claims Niman made in her article. According to Singer, grass fed beef results in more, not less, greenhouse gas production than factory farmed beef:

Hence the call to cut down or eliminate meat-eating, especially beef, should be supported by everyone concerned about the future of our planet.

As public attention increasingly focuses on food’s connection to climate change, it’s becoming ever-clearer that veganism is by far the best way to go. Link.
