There’s another big yet half-assed beef recall going on now. This time around, a California company is recalling more than 22,000 pounds of beef for Salmonella contamination.
Not only was the beef in question produced two-and-a-half months ago, for some reason the company has apparently chosen not to release the names of the retailers that carried the beef. Here’s CNN’s reporting:
The products were sold in Arizona and New Mexico, said Mark Klein, spokesman for Cargill Inc., which owns Beef Packers, Inc. Consumers in those states should check with stores where they purchased meat to determine if they bought the recalled beef.
Consumers should check with stores? Cargill’s not telling what stores are involved? WTF? Klein also emailed CNN:
We take these matters seriously which is why we have initiated the recall and have cooperated with the government.
So, let’s get this straight: they’re recalling beef that was doubtless nearly all eaten two months ago, and they’re refusing to name the retailers who sold the meat, and they claim to be taking this matter seriously? Unreal.
In nearly two years of blogging, I don’t think I’ve seen a clearer example of a meat company showing contempt for its customers. (Thanks, Rachel.) Link.
Update: The USDA has released a list of more than one hundred Safeway supermarkets that sold the recalled beef. Link.
