As Fish Oil Demand Grows, Menhaden Pay the Price

January 22, 2010

A month ago I blogged about a superb New York Times opinion piece condemning one company, Omega Protein, for wiping out huge quantities of menhaden for the sake of grinding these fish into omega-3 rich oil.

This week, the Houston Press published a long feature article all about this company, exposing its rapacious environmental practices and all-around untrustworthiness. The piece is excellent reading; it features loads of research mixed with top-quality snark.

Considering that just this week, we’ve seen yet another high-profile study touting fish oil, it looks like Omega Protein has more incentive than ever to catch every menhaden it can, while it can. Link.
