California Sushi Restaurant Caught Serving Whale Meat

March 11, 2010

A Santa Monica sushi restaurant named The Hump has been busted by the feds for serving whale meat. The criminal charge came about as a result of a sting orchestrated by the Sea Shepherd’s Zoli Ignite Teglas and The Cove’s associate producer Charles Hambleton. The restaurant is now looking at a possible $200,000 fine, plus a year of jail time for the persons responsible.

Teglas and Hambleton’s sting was carried out by two vegan women who went to the restaurant, ordered a dish made from whale meat, and filmed the transaction on a hidden camera. The women bagged their meals and sent the samples to a laboratory for testing, and the results showed the flesh came from the endangered sei whale. Link.
