USDA Advises Against Washing Raw Meat

April 12, 2010

Here’s some shocking advice: the USDA is now recommending that consumers don’t wash red meat and poultry before cooking. The agency thinks the risk of cross-contamination brought about by washing outweighs the added safety brought about by scrubbing meat prior to cooking.

If raw meat is so dangerous that even washing the stuff poses health risks, why isn’t the USDA recommending reducing or eliminating its consumption? I know, I know…stupid question. (Thanks Bea.) Link.
