Starbucks Set to Announce Vegan Frappucinos

April 19, 2010

Nearly forty years ago, Woodward and Bernstein broke the Watergate story, shocking America to its core and bringing down a corrupt presidency. And now QuarryGirl has an even more momentous scoop: Starbucks is switching at least some of its frappucinos to an all-vegan base. She’s written up the details and has even tried the new product—which she says kicks ass. Some of the reader comments to her blog post provide additional information.

Expect Starbucks to make a formal introduction the first week of May. At that point we’ll definitively know what’s what. I’ll follow up here with another blog entry once that happens.

Apart from making life a bit easier for vegans craving a caffeine and sugar rush, here’s the greater significance: you can understand why companies would put dairy-containing cheese on pizza and burgers and so forth, but hidden dairy products added for no apparent reason are just a big liability, since they make the product unpurchasable both by vegans and by people who are dairy intolerant. Starbucks has obviously caught onto this fact, and I bet this move starts a trend of other companies reformulating their products to exclude hidden dairy products. Link.
