Irresponsible Guardian Reporting on Vegan Nutrition for Kids

April 20, 2010

The London Guardian just published an article on nutrition issues facing vegan children, the first half of which raises all sorts of alarmist concerns. They only interview one dietitian, and this person doesn’t seem all that receptive to vegan diets—she even talks about protein combining of all things; something long known as irrelevant to people eating a healthful and decent variety of foods.

Happily, the last three paragraphs have the media person from the Vegan Society setting the record straight. Not good enough: you’ve got to think that many people will only read the first half of the piece, and come away convinced that a vegan diet is flat out dangerous to kids. Done right, it’s not.

Finally, how tough would it have been for the author of this piece to interview a dietitian who specializes in vegan nutrition? And why have untrained journalists write on this topic to begin with? Is this the best the Guardian can do? (Thanks, David.) Link.
