Will Fish and Chips Turn into a Rich Man’s Food?

May 10, 2010

I’ve noticed over the years that the gloom and doom articles assessing the state of the world’s fisheries have gotten gloomier and doomier. And today’s Daily Mail piece may be the bleakest yet:

Ten or twenty years from now, if you believe the scientists, wild fish will be something that only the very rich will be able to eat. For the rest of us, the menu will feature reconstituted fish bites made from algae and jellyfish.

Or we’ll exclusively eat the second-rate fish farmed in swamps and pens, already the source of half of the world’s seafood.

If you want to lose hope in humanity, you need look no further than fisheries management over the past century. (Via Edible SF.) Link.
