My all-time favorite snack food might well be tortilla chips and hummus. As far as I’m concerned it’s probably the best fusion snack ever: a classic Mexican food that pairs perfectly with a Middle Eastern staple. I can’t live without it, especially during football season, and I’ve doubtless eaten hundreds of pounds of chips and hummus over the years.
But lately, since I’ve eaten so much of it for so long, the pairing doesn’t grab me like it once did. Luckily, I’ve stumbled onto a great new combination this past week: Food Should Taste Good’s sweet potato tortilla chips, dipped into the raspberry chipotle hummus made by Wildwood.
You can buy the chips through Amazon.com, in perfectly-sized 1.5 ounce bags that go for under a buck each. The hummus is available in the refrigerated case at many natural foods retailers throughout the USA, including Whole Foods Market.
Now I know this stuff would likely offend the sensibilities of Mexicans and Middle Easterners alike. This combination isn’t for purists, but it’s incredibly good.
The chips have the same great texture as the best tortilla chips you’ve ever eaten, but just enough sweet potato flavor to make their taste completely new. And the sweet potato flavor blends perfectly with the tart raspberry and hot and smoky chipotle flavor of the hummus. A word of warning: when I wrote “hot” I meant it. Nearly all natural food companies wimp out when it comes to making their products genuinely hot, but Wildwood takes the high road at the risk of shrinking their potential customer base.
On top of all that, this hummus is “probiotic,” which means it’ll supposedly help your digestion. I don’t know or care if that’s the case; all I can say is that the pairing of these two products is my favorite food discovery of the summer. If your love for chips and hummus has waned, and you can tolerate spicy hot food, give this a try.
