This is bad. Morrissey just called Chinese people a “subspecies” because of the country’s track record of animal abuse. There’s no doubt that animal welfare standards in China are abominable, but it’s impossible to see any good to animals coming from what will be seen as overtly racist remarks.
Tragic, considering that it’s hardly stretching the truth to say Morrissey singlehandedly pushed vegetarianism into the mainstream in 1980s Britain, with the release of The Smiths’ “Meat Is Murder.”
I hope he has the good sense to quickly and graciously apologize. (Thanks, Matt.) Link.
