Killing Your Own Thanksgiving Turkey

November 22, 2010

This irritating but important New York Times piece is likely to disturb omnivores even more than it annoys vegans:

She was a beautiful bird, a Bourbon Red turkey whose rich brown feathers were flecked with white, and she had spent her days roaming free around an organic farm that overlooked the Hudson River. But as I stood watching her, she did not seem happy. Instead, with her almond eyes downcast, her subdued manner suggested a kind of forbearance.

Perhaps she sensed I was not there to make friends. In truth, I was there to kill her.

As I often write, there are countless omnivores who’ve made peace with the idea of killing an animal because they like how it tastes. Yet, in their own way, these people can be uniquely effective at making their fellow omnivores think twice about eating meat. (Thanks, Tim.) Link.
