Vancouver Sun Publishes Call to Eliminate Seal Hunting

January 24, 2011

Important stuff here: the Vancouver Sun has published an opinion piece for a Humane Society International staffer calling for an end to seal hunting.

Leaving ethical issues completely aside, the hunt has turned into a financial disaster:

In 2009, one sealer commented that there was more money to be made collecting pop bottles from the side of the road.

The piece continues:

To put it simply, there is negligible commercial demand for seal products. That means there is no time like the present to call an end to the killing and forge a better future for Canada, our fishermen and our wildlife.

Let’s hope the momentum is seized to enact a ban. The nonprofit organization HarpSeals.org has created an email tool for animal advocates seeking to put an end to the hunt. (Via Michelle.) Link.
