Cody Winchester reports:
John Morrell & Co. has agreed to pay a $162,500 civil fine for undervaluing hog carcasses and falsifying records at slaughterhouses in Sioux Falls and Sioux City, Iowa – a move that potentially cheated hog sellers out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The Cincinnati-based company said the underpayments simply were a mistake that it is working to rectify.
