Paula Deen was on the Today Show this morning. I promise you that if you care even a little about healthful eating, smoke will be coming out of your ears by the time you finish watching this six minute video.
Al Roker gives a surprisingly hard-hitting interview, at least by the Today Show’s floofy standards. It turns out that Deen has kept her diabetes secret for the past three years, and anyone with half a brain can see she needed time to transition from taking money from Smithfield to taking money from a pharmaceutical company. Nevermind that this meant that she went a full three years continuing to encourage people to eat the same sorts of godawful foods that likely caused her own diabetes. And nevermind that very few of her fans are likely to have access to the same quality of medical care that Deen has access to.
Roker asks some pretty direct questions about all this, and Deen bobs and weaves and refuses to give even a moment of candor. Asked why she delayed announcing her disease, she says: “I had nothing to give to my fellow friends out there.”
Except another three years of the most diabetes-promoting recipes imaginable while she lined up her endorsement deal with pharmaceutical giant Novartis.
And then she goes on to say, with a straight face, “I’ve always encouraged moderation.”
I nearly fell out of my chair. (Thanks, Scott.) Link.
