Bittman on Compass Group’s Gestation Crate Announcement

March 9, 2012

Well-informed background coverage of the subject, inspired by this month’s decision by food services giant Compass Group to phase out gestation crate pork by 2017. Bittman’s conclusion is exactly right:

Compass’ announcement is yet another resounding signal to the pork industry that gestation crates will not be a viable part of the pork production system in the future. As more companies with considerable purchasing power demand a shift, we’ll likely start to see the industry fall in line.

It’ll happen sooner rather than later—gestation crates have no future. A pork producer would be nuts to invest in new gestation crate housing given that this is a style of production that’s fast moving toward being banned industrywide. Link.
