Vegan Beauty & Personal Care Products

Just as you can choose foods that don’t cause harm to animals, none of your beauty products need involve animal exploitation either.

Most drugstores carry a number of shampoos, lipsticks, and so forth that feature vegan declarations on their packaging. But your shopping experience will still be needlessly limited and frustrating.

The trouble is that most cosmetics brands still aren’t vegan. So your selection at retail stores is often quite limited, and you’ll waste a lot of time looking at non-vegan products. Given that vegans oppose hunting, why should they have to hunt for vegan beauty products?

If you value your time, the easiest way to buy exclusively vegan beauty and personal care items is to shop online. We’ve done all tedious work for you, by linking to all the best vegan products sold by Amazon.com.

So if you’re seeking great deals on a wide selection of products, see our links below. Alternately, jump to the next section for a closer look at the topic.

Why Do So Many Beauty Products Contain Animal Products?

Beauty companies tend to spend a fortune on fancy packaging while cutting corners on their products’ actual ingredients. Viscous fats and proteins are the primary components of most beauty products. And there’s no cheaper source of these substances than a slaughterhouse. That means that most beauty products, unless they are deliberately formulated to be vegan, contain animal ingredients.

Luckily, there are quite a few brands committed to entirely vegan product lines. These include Acure, Manic Panic, and Pacifica. The biggest trend in the cosmetics industry is toward cruelty-free products. And credit where credit is due: many smaller beauty companies today are able to offer cruelty-free products thanks to the millions of dollars that industry giants Revlon, Avon, and Procter & Gamble have poured into developing alternatives to animal testing.

How Do You Find Out if a Beauty Product Contains Animal Ingredients?

Unlike food, you won’t be able to determine an item’s vegan status by reading the ingredient panel. That’s because beauty companies use countless substances that aren’t allowed in food. And some of these chemicals can be made from vegan or animal sources. Even if you had unlimited amounts of time, you’d find it nearly impossible to track down the origin of all the ingredients for a given cosmetic product. And who knows if the producer would switch suppliers for the next batch?

So instead, just look for a vegan seal on the product’s packaging. Oftentimes you’ll also find a second seal proclaiming the product was formulated without animal testing.
